Throughout the summer, more than 120 campers ages 8 to 12 joined SICSA for Humane Hero Summer Camps! The campers learned about animal welfare topics such as the lives of pets in shelters, and dog and cat behavior. They also completed projects to benefit the pets of SICSA, like making toys for dogs to enjoy in their kennels, and hiding holes to help timid cats feel safe. They met some of our pets, and a few campers even went on to adopt with their families! Even now we continue to see some familiar faces as multiple campers have returned as PYPer Volunteers!
Beyond the main campus, SICSA was grateful to work with Miami Valley Downs Syndrome Association as they offered their own version of Humane Hero Camp at their facility! For two weeks, they welcomed campers and their siblings to learn through SICSA’s program, wrapping up each Friday with a visit from one of SICSA’s dogs. They were even kind enough to donate dog and cat toys they made, as well as hiding holes, and “thank you” cards for future adopters!
Overall, the dedication to animals at SICSA and beyond was apparent through each “class” of Humane Hero Graduates. We had an incredible time learning and growing with them this summer and have already begun counting down the days until we can welcome them back!
If your little camper wasn’t able to attend, there are a limited number of Humane Hero Summer Camp in a Box sets available through SICSA’s online store. You can even add on a Buddy Box for a sibling or friend! Each box contains a Super Book with the camp’s lessons for campers to work through, extra activity sheets, craft instructions, and supplies.
