Why Spay or Neuter my pet?

There are estimated to be 70 million cats who live in the US. Approximately  7.6 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide every year. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats).

These numbers clearly illustrate the dire situation for homeless pets in our country, and animals in the Miami Valley are no exception. While SICSA’s no-kill mission ensures placement for all adoptable animals in our care, we recognize the need to take action to reduce pet overpopulation. We believe the most responsible and humane option is to proactively sterilize pets to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens, ultimately reducing the number of animals entering shelters and at risk of euthanasia. We do our part by spaying and neutering thousands of animals each year for our community, most at a reduced rate for low to middle-income families.

Is the veterinarian licensed?

Yes! The veterinarian who will perform the spay or neuter procedure on your pet(s) is fully licensed. SICSA veterinarians have performed thousands of spay and neuter surgeries. The veterinarian is assisted by a registered veterinary technician and well trained assistants. Your pet will receive the same care and surgical treatment as in private practice veterinary facilities.

How do I know if my pet will be safe under anesthesia?

The SICSA veterinarian will perform a brief physical exam on the day of your spay/neuter appointment prior to surgery to determine whether or not your pet is a candidate for surgery. Please be aware that the physical exam performed the day of surgery is not a complete physical exam. If there is a medical concern with your pet(s) where the veterinarian does not believe they will be safe under anesthesia, you will be contacted immediately. It is important that you make yourself available by phone that day to be contacted if needed. The veterinarian and/or assistants will also discuss any health concerns observed with you at the time of surgical discharge.

Will my pet be in pain after the procedure?

Your pet(s) will be given sedation medication prior to being placed under general anesthesia for the spay or neuter operation. All animals are given pain medication effective for 24 hours on the day of surgery. If you feel your pet is in pain on the day after surgery, or the days after surgery please do not hesitate to contact the SICSA veterinarian staff to purchase additional pain medication for a fee of $15. We strongly discourage you from using “human” pain meds at home for your pet as many of the over-the-counter medications are toxic. Drug interactions can harm or possibly kill your pet. Again, if you have any concerns about the comfort of your pet after surgery, please call the SICSA Veterinarian Staff.

What are the standard after-care methods?

When you come to pick up your pet on the day of surgery the veterinarian and/or assistants will discuss any health concerns observed with your pet at the time of surgical discharge. You will be given guidelines for post operation care. It is essential that you follow the guidelines to ensure your pet recovers quickly and safely! You are free to contact SICSA after the surgery if you have concerns. SICSA will see your pet if they are experiencing complications due to the surgery. It is important that you establish a relationship with your own vet to address ongoing healthcare for your pet.

Why is it so cheap?

As you know, we are able to offer a lower price than local veterinarians for the spay/neuter procedure, which typically ranges from $250 - $500 at most private practices. Our costs are lower for the following reasons: We are a not-for-profit, tax exempt organization. We receive grants to help subsidize the costs of spay/neuter procedures.

What is the Refund and Reschedule Policy?

Please note, our refund and reschedule policies do not apply to Stray or Feral cats in Trap-Neuter-Return programs. We understand there is difficulty in trapping feral cats.

Refund Policy

We schedule and pre-pay for our veterinarian's time. Please make sure you are able to bring your animal on the date scheduled as we are unable to offer refunds of any kind once the service has been paid.

Reschedule Policy

SICSA will charge a $20 reschedule fee if the appointment is cancelled within 72 hours of the scheduled appointment.
