Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours are required of a volunteer? We do not have a minimum requirement of hours. Volunteers collaborate with staff and set their own schedules for volunteering at SICSA. Other volunteers may just volunteer at one event -once a year, so time requirements are very flexible.

What is expected?
All volunteers must come to an orientation and follow (sometimes) strict protocols and other directives when working with the animals . Volunteers are asked to become $35 members of SICSA and wear a volunteer t-shirt while volunteering in public areas of SICSA.

Am I trained?
All volunteers receive training depending on what they are volunteering for. For example dog walkers receive Open Paw Training.

What is required to be a foster?
To be a foster, all your pets must be up-to-date on vaccines and spayed or neutered. Prospective foster families will meet with the foster care coordinator after receiving the foster application, to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Foster families can specify to only foster a certain breed or time of year etc.

What is open paw training?
The open paw program focuses on physical and mental health needs of the animals in our care by training staff and volunteers to achieve small goals throughout the day. Staff and volunteers are trained to use consistent positive training techniques that assist in keeping the animals happier and more adoptable.

Do I have to be trained in Open Paw to work with the animals?
If you want to walk, socialize or train dogs; or socialize cats you are required to complete Open Paw training. Depending upon your interests, you may be required to complete just one training session. If you find you enjoy volunteering and want to do more, you are encouraged to complete additional levels of Open Paw training (five levels for cats and four levels for dogs).
